Cal Coons is an award-winning Canadian Showrunner/Writer/Director. He is the architect behind two of Canada’s most successful dramas — Murdoch Mysteries and Frankie Drake Mysteries.  Cal is intrigued by the process of not just making great television but also finding and maintaining an audience.  

Cal developed Murdoch Mysteries, for CBC/ITV and showran the first two seasons.  The series quickly became an international hit airing in 110 countries.  Now in its 13th season, with over 200 episodes produced, it continues to be one of Canada’s top rated dramas.  For his work on the show he received a Gemini Nomination for Best series.

Most recently, Cal worked as Showrunner on the third season of Hudson and Rex for Rogers/Beta.  Prior to that he served as Showrunner on Frankie Drake Mysteries for CBC/KEW.  It too has proven to be one of Canada’s most watched shows and has also sold world-wide.  He garnered a Canadian Screen Award Nomination for Best Series.

As well, Cal was Executive Producer/Co-Showrunnner of the second season of The Listener for CTV/FOX INTERNATIONAL.  He co-created the police procedural Blue Murder for GLOBAL/ALLIANCE-ATLANTIS.

He has written and directed for numerous series including Hudson and Rex, Frankie Drake Mysteries, Murdoch Mysteries, Republic of Doyle, Remedy, The Listener, Good Witch and Blue Murder. He has served as creative consultant on several series including Republic of Doyle.

A graduate of the prestigious Canadian Film Centre and Niagara College (Honours diploma in Broadcasting:RTV), he is a member of both the Writers and Directors Guilds of Canada.  Cal makes his home in Toronto.
